‘Why does my child have flat feet?’

Treatment for Children with Flat Feet in Melbourne

What are Flat Feet?

Flat feet are very common in babies and young children. In this condition, the arch of the foot is low or absent, especially when standing. In infants the arch is hidden by the baby fat pad within the foot, while young children may have flat feet because the muscles and ligaments in the foot are still developing.

In most children, the arch becomes more visible as they grow, usually by around 5–7 years of age. Flat feet are typically painless and do not affect a child’s ability to walk, run, or play. However, some children may appear a little clumsy, tire more easily, or complain of foot or leg discomfort, particularly after long periods of activity.

Signs your child has flat feet

You may notice:

  • A low or absent arch when your child is standing

  • Ankles or feet appear to roll inwards

  • Your child's shoes wear unevenly

  • Your child appears less coordinated or frequently trips

  • Your child tires easily during walking or running

It's important to remember that flat feet on their own are usually a normal part of childhood development. An assessment can help determine whether your child's foot posture is appropriate for their age and development.

How can physiotherapy help?

Your physiotherapist will assess your child’s foot posture, strength, and movement to determine if their flat feet are within normal development. Management of flat feet includes strengthening exercises, balance and coordination activites, advice on appropriate footwear and education for parents.

Your physiotherapist will monitor your child over time to ensure their feet are developing appropriately and will refer to a specialist if needed.

Will my baby walk normally?

The good news is that with early treatment, most children with clubfoot go on to walk, run, jump and participate in everyday activities and sport. Ongoing follow-up helps ensure the best possible long-term outcome.
