My Child has Scoliosis - What Next?
What is Scoliosis ?
Scoliosis is a condition where the spine curves and rotates sideways, often in an “S” or “C” shape, rather than growing in a straight line. It most commonly develops in children and teenagers, particularly during periods of rapid growth such as puberty.
In many cases, the exact cause of scoliosis is unknown (this is called idiopathic scoliosis), but it can also be related to congenital spinal differences or underlying neuromuscular conditions. As the spine curves and rotates, it may lead to uneven shoulders, a prominent rib cage, or asymmetry in the waist or hips.
While some cases are mild and cause little to no discomfort, others may progress as a child grows, potentially leading to stiffness, muscle fatigue, or back pain. Early identification and monitoring are important to help manage progression and maintain function.
How can we help?
Management of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis depends on the severity of the curve, as well as your child’s age and remaining growth. Mild curves are typically monitored over time to ensure they are not progressing. For more moderate curves, bracing may be recommended to help prevent further progression during growth. In more severe cases, surgical intervention may be considered.
Our Melbourne Physiotherapists can provide a thorough assessment, clear diagnosis, and ongoing monitoring where appropriate. We focus on education and reassurance, helping you and your child understand the condition and what to expect at each stage.
We also guide your child through appropriate exercises to maintain strength, flexibility, and overall fitness. Our goal is to support your child in remaining active and comfortable, while working alongside other healthcare providers if needed to ensure the best possible long-term outcomes.
